Star Ranch for Families: Schools, Safety, Amenities, and Daily Life

School access, the community pool, safety stats, childcare, and what it actually feels like to raise kids in Star Ranch. The honest version.

Star Ranch has a significant family population, and the community's design, amenities, and school access make it a common choice for households with children.

School Access: Choosing Your Side of Gattis

    South of Gattis (Pflugerville ISD)

Dearing Elementary is rated 6/10 with a TEA grade of B, outperforming Hutto ISD elementary options. Hendrickson High School is rated 8/10 with a 98% graduation rate — ranked #1 among PISD high schools. The middle school picture is in flux: Park Crest Middle (currently 5/10) has been proposed for closure in 2027–28, which would likely rezone to Kelly Lane Middle (rated 7–8/10).

    North of Gattis (Hutto ISD)

Elementary and middle school ratings sit in the 4–5/10 range. Hutto High School is rated 6/10 with a 94% graduation rate and 20+ AP courses. Hutto ISD is investing heavily in growth — a $522 million bond is funding a second high school, new elementary schools, and facility modernization.

Important: Verify specific feeder school assignments directly with each district for your address. Automated tools and even community guides have been found to list incorrect school assignments for Star Ranch addresses.

    Community Amenities for Families

    • Swimming pool and amenity center — included in the $33/month HOA, the lowest in the Hutto area, and a central gathering point in warmer months.
    • Golf course open space — even non-golfers benefit from significant green space and walking paths along portions of the course.
    • Neighborhood layout — sidewalks throughout, low interior-street traffic volumes, and cul-de-sacs that provide additional safe play areas.

    Safety

Hutto has a lower crime rate than many surrounding communities. With an overall crime rate of 10 per 1,000 residents, Hutto is safer than 81% of Texas cities. For comparison: Round Rock 21 per 1,000, Pflugerville 18 per 1,000. Zero homicides were reported in the most recent available crime data period.

    Nearby Parks and Recreation

Fritz Park in Hutto includes playgrounds, sports fields, and community event space. Round Rock (~15 minutes west) offers extensive park systems, public pools, and youth sports leagues — most organized league participation will involve a drive to Round Rock or Pflugerville.

    Childcare and Early Education

Hutto ISD opened its second Little Hippos Child Development Center at the new Lee Martinez Elementary in fall 2025. Quality and availability vary across private centers, and waitlists for preferred programs are common — start researching options before your move.

    Groceries and Essentials

H-E-B Plus opened at Gattis School Road and SH-130 — a full-service store with pharmacy, deli, and bakery, less than a mile from the main entrance.

    The Commute Factor for Parents

If both parents work in downtown Austin, the combined daily commute on I-35 is significant. If one parent works remotely or one is at Samsung Taylor (15–20 min) or Round Rock (15 min), the equation changes substantially. Map this honestly before you buy.

    Growing Up in Star Ranch

Children here have access to a golf course, a community pool, neighborhood streets safe for biking and walking, and proximity to multiple school options. Mature landscaping and established character provide a different childhood experience than newer subdivisions still under construction. The primary limitation for teenagers is that Hutto doesn't yet have the commercial density for extensive entertainment, dining, or employment within walking or biking distance — a car is effectively required for social activities beyond the immediate neighborhood, though this is improving as Hutto's commercial development accelerates.

    Family-Focused Buying Checklist

    • Verify school district AND specific feeder school assignment directly with the district for the specific address
    • Visit the assigned schools, or at minimum review current ratings and programs
    • Evaluate lot position for child safety (cul-de-sacs and interior lots away from major roads preferred)
    • Check the FEMA flood zone designation for the specific lot
    • Check proximity to the community pool and amenity center
    • Assess backyard size and usability for children's play
    • Research childcare and extracurriculars in the area before moving
    • Calculate the true commute impact for your family's specific work situations
